Espiga Festival wins regional final of the 7 Wonders of Popular Culture

Festa da Espiga beat the other six finalist candidacies

The Espiga Festival, by Salir (Loulé), is the winner of the regional final of the 7 Wonders of Popular Culture, passing to the semi-finals of the contest. 

The announcement has just been made on RTP1, which, throughout the day, dedicated its broadcast to the regional final of the district of Faro which took place in Monchique.

The Espiga Festival beat the other six finalists: the strawberry distillery (Monchique), the copper cataplana and the Mãe Soberana (Loulé), the Charolas de Bordeira and the Festa da Pinha (Faro) and the Procession of Hallelujah (São Brás de Alportel).

This festival, whose candidacy for the 7 Wonders has Reinaldo Teixeira as godfather, takes place on the day of the spike and is "a celebration whose origins are attributed to the pagan practice of Celtic and Roman times and also to the Christian celebration of the Feast of the Ascension," he explains. the Salir Parish Council.

"On that day people went to the field and composed their branch of the cob, which was hung behind the door of the house until the following year, when it was replaced by another branch, symbolizing prosperity and luck for the crops".

Conceived in the 60s, by José Viegas Gregório, from Salirense, this festival gained a regional dimension, becoming a tourist attraction in the interior, receiving thousands of visitors who come here to enjoy the ethnographic procession, handicrafts, gastronomy, folklore , popular poetry and all the musical animation.
