Summer School at the University of Algarve teaches how to study oceans with satellite data

Summer school is scheduled to start at the end of July

The extraction and use of satellite data, to study phenomena and processes in the ocean, will be the theme of the “Ocean Color Summer School”, which will be hosted by the Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA) of the University of Algarve, from the end of July.

This initiative is part of the “Summer School” of the University of Algarve, financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology and is part of the priorities defined in the National Strategy for Space.

This Summer School, whose training program will be promoted by CIMA researchers Sónia Cristina and Priscila Goela, «has the support of Portugal Space and includes in its training panel several researchers who are distributed among the universities of Algarve, Lisbon, Aveiro , Évora, Azores and Porto, as well as the Hydrographic Institute (IH) and the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA)», adds the University of Algarve.

The objectives of the training plan are, according to the Algarve academy, «on the one hand, to train students in the subject of remote sensing of the ocean color, and, on the other, to stimulate scientific cooperation between students and professors from different national institutions».

The Ocean Color Summer School includes a teaching training component and a research component, to be carried out exclusively in person.

«It is intended that brief research works will be carried out, both in the premises of the University of the Algarve, and in partner institutions, with funding for 10 research grants, aimed at undergraduate and master's students», adds UAlg.

Undergraduate and Masters students in areas related to Marine Sciences, such as Earth and Atmosphere Sciences, Marine Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Oceanography, Geophysics, Remote Sensing, Computer Science, among others, can compete.

The start of the Ocean Color Summer School is scheduled for the end of July and will last for three months.
