Câmara de Lagos installs 13 new ecological islands

The 13 new ecological islands are part of the supply and installation of 57 underground containers

The Câmara de Lagos will install 13 new ecological islands in various locations in the municipality and the public tender for the project has already been launched.

The 13 new ecological islands include the supply and installation of 57 underground containers, as well as the landscape treatment of the surroundings, representing an investment of 431 thousand euros, plus VAT.

«Extending the existing network of recycling bins in the municipality, in order to further encourage the separation of waste and selective collection, is one of the objectives of this intervention», says the Câmara de Lagos.

In parallel, «the intention is to promote the planning and enhancement of urban space», he adds.

The ecological islands will consist of containers for recyclable waste and unsorted waste containers.

There are currently 802 selective collection points in the county spread over the four parishes.

According to data provided by ALGAR (the entity that collects, treats and forwards recyclable waste), Lagos was, in the 1st half of 2019, the 5th municipality in the Algarve region that sent more waste for recycling, with 679 tons of glass, 541 tons of paper/board and 379 tons of plastic and metal.

In terms of capitation (Kg/inhabitant/year), Lagos was, in the same period, the 4th municipality in the Algarve with the highest repossession capitation, with a value of 53 kg per inhabitant.

In all, in 2019, the Lacobrigenses separated and deposited on the ecological islands 1 tons of glass, 786,95 tons of paper/cardboard and 1 tons of packaging (plastic and metal).
