A 43-year-old German is a formal suspect in the abduction and murder of Madeleine McCann (Maddie), a three-year-old English child at the time who disappeared from Praia da Luz, Lagos, in 2007, the Judiciary Police (PJ) revealed today.
According to this police force, "as part of the investigation into the disappearance of an English child, which occurred in the Algarve in 2007," "elements that indicate the possible intervention, in the child's disappearance, of a German citizen" were collected.
"The suspect in question, 43 years old, with a criminal record, resided in Portugal between 1996 and 2007 and is currently serving a prison sentence in Germany," added the PJ.
TVI24, that advanced the news, says that the suspect is a "sexual predator", who "is serving a sentence for another case of rape of a woman, but he was at Praia da Luz when Maddie disappeared."
“There is evidence collected in recent months that put him as the alleged perpetrator of the crimes of abduction and murder of Maddie, a child who was on vacation in the Algarve with his parents and friends. As for the motive of crime, everything points to motivations of a sexual nature», according to the television channel.
The investigation that led to this suspect is being carried out, “in close coordination with the German (BKA) and English (Metropolitan Police) authorities, in the sharing of information, in carrying out formal acts of investigation and expertise, in Portugal and abroad”, according to the Judiciary Police.
It was the Metropolitan Police, which identified "a white Volkswagen caravan van that the suspect, who was not identified, used to live in and also a Jaguar car to which he would have access," TVI24 revealed.
“The police also identified two cell phone numbers, one used by the suspect and who will have received a call between 19:32 and 20:02 on May 3 in the Praia da Luz area, and another that initiated the call and which could be a “highly significant witness,” adds TVI24.
After the TVI24 report, the PJ confirmed the existence of this suspect. adding that “diligences continue to be taken to fully clarify the situation”.
