Olhão expands urban public transport network

Network will be extended to areas of Quelfes and Pechão

The public tender for the expansion of the urban public transport network for passengers in Olhão will be launched in the coming weeks, to "introduce significant improvements in the quality of the offer of this service within the city and extend it to some areas of Quelfes and Pechão".

The Municipality of Olhão added, in a press release, that "most of the peripheral areas of the municipality, namely the parishes of Pechão, Quelfes, Moncarapacho and Fuseta, are already covered by an intercity network of public passenger transport".

This expansion comes “following the need identified by the municipality for a more attractive urban transport network, which implies a reduction in travel time and an improvement in the coverage of the territory and service schedules, both within the city and, as planned. in the project, in some areas of the parishes of Quelfes and Pechão, where this service is currently deficient».

In practice, this new service will create lines that serve areas of the city in expansion and that do not have services and allow a more efficient intermodal connection to other means of transport, benefiting the population's mobility.

In the municipality of Olhão, there are four municipal public passenger transport routes, whose contracting is the responsibility of the Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve.

These routes link all the parish's headquarters to the county's headquarters, also serving the agglomerations of Poço Longo, Marim, Quatrim, Poço da Areia and Brancanes, and the offer provided by these services is very differentiated.

According to the mayor, António Miguel Pina, “the areas furthest away from the city's urban fabric, such as Moncarapacho and Fuseta, are already reasonably served by public passenger transport. What was lacking, until now, was an optimized network within the urban fabric, which allows for the most efficient connection possible, in a logic of articulation between the various services available to the population».

The network to be contracted, whose proposal has already received a favorable opinion from the Mobility and Transport Authority, will consist of three lines. The municipality also intends to improve the ticketing system, so that it is easy to use and charge, being interoperable with the ticketing system for intercity and municipal lines.

The implementation and maintenance of stops on urban circuits is also planned, with the provision of updated information to the public.
