the work of construction of the Crematorium of Faro «it is on its way to its end», announced, this Tuesday, June 9, the City Council. The expectation is that the infrastructure will be completed "by the end of summer".

While the project continues, the municipality has sold three deposits in the New Cemetery of Faro.

The deposits, identified with numbers 9, 10 and 25, are all located in Block H and were sold on the 6th of May for the total value of 63.200,00 euros.

«This sale comes at a time when the New Cemetery of Faro it benefits from a series of improvements already carried out, with the construction of the new municipal crematorium, whose work continues without any hitches and at an accelerated pace”, explains the City Council. Faro.

In this way, «the expectation that the crematorium will be completed by the end of the summer remains unscathed, fulfilling the ancient and just demand of the populations who, today, still have to travel hundreds of kilometers to carry out the cremation ceremonies of their loved ones ».

The crematorium will be equipped with two ovens, one for funeral cremations and a pyrolytic oven for burning waste associated with burials, such as flowers and remains of urns. It will also have all related facilities, such as a thanatopraxy room, reception, ecumenical chapel, storage rooms, toilets and dressing room.

The construction of this equipment also puts an end to a long process that dated back to 2011, the year in which the Municipality put the crematorium up for competition for the first time.

After the resolution of the legal problems, the final award was signed on June 14 of last year with Servilusa – Agências Funerárias SA and FPC Construções Lda.

Under the terms of the concession agreement, the Chamber of Faro will receive 1700 euros per month for the occupation of the land and 1% of the value of each cremation, having been guaranteed a significant discount for the municipality's residents - residents in Faro will pay 258 euros per cremation, while non-residents will pay 309 euros. Bones will cost 180 euros.

For the city council executive, this is excellent news for the city and the region.

President Rogério Bacalhau even recalls “that the population has long been asking for this support and it was difficult to explain how the Algarve had been without this response for so many years”.

On the other hand, the mayor considers that “the new crematorium also represents an important development with regard to the management of cemetery spaces and allows us to better respond to the needs of Faro and the Algarve».

In Albufeira, moreover, there is already a working crematorium – the first in the region.
