Loulé: Rotunda do Euro to become Rotunda do Barrocal

Project by landscape architect Fernando Pessoa

The roundabout on Avenida Parque das Cidades, at the entrance to Loulé, on the connection to Faro, known as “Rotunda do Euro”, will start to be reclassified in the first days of July and will be renamed “Rotunda do Barrocal”.

This roundabout, designed by landscape architect Fernando Pessoa, «intended to be the gateway to the interior of the municipality», explains the Câmara de Loulé.

According to the municipality, «the redevelopment of the main roundabout on the road between Faro, capital of the region, and the city of Loulé, will promote the typical landscape and vegetation of the Algarve region, as well as enhance the location and centrality of the municipality of Loulé».

The work «intends to promote the main natural values of the region, both in its geology and pedology, as well as in its vegetation».

According to those responsible for the project, «as this is a roundabout between roads with a lot of traffic, it is proposed that the conservation of the landscaped space does not require a great demand for permanent labor, resorting to ample spaces for inert and a landscaping with undemanding species in maintenance».

The Municipality of Loulé considers that «with this intervention, the city of Loulé will have one more of its 'entrance doors' with a renewed image, based on environmental preservation and also on the enhancement of endogenous elements, which are part of our cultural identity ».

The work will cost around 52 thousand euros and has a period of execution of 90 days.

According to the Municipality of Loulé, «the hope is to create a visual impact on those passing by vehicle at the roundabout by the «color contrast of the various forms of coverage, until, later on, the vegetation, on acquiring a larger dimension, also imposes its presence incisively'.

Architect Fernando Pessoa, in partnership with architect João Marum, recently designed the Manuel Gomes Guerreiro Eco Botanical Trail, which will soon be inaugurated in the village of Querença, in the middle of the Algarve's Barrocal region.

This joint project of the Municipality of Loulé and the Manuel Viegas Guerreiro Foundation results from an application to the CRESC Algarve 2020 funding program, and will allow the creation of the first botanical garden in the region.
