PSD deputy Cristóvão Norte accused the government of "laxity" in dealing with the recent arrivals of migrants in the Algarve and demanded that "measures be taken to prevent the birth of a new route for illegal migrants, a gateway to Portugal and Europe », following the re-disembarkation of migrants from North Africa on Monday.

In a hearing to the Minister of Internal Administration, at the Assembly of the Republic, the parliamentarian elected by Algarve defended that «the laxity of the State is an invitation to illegal migrant trafficking routes, since many of the illegal immigrants who are in SEF's custody are in whereabouts uncertain, on the run, unable to be deported. This is an aggression against the rule of law».

It is that, recalled Cristóvão Norte, of the eight migrants who landed in Monte Gordo in December 2019, "seven had their requests for international protection refused and five of them are in an unknown whereabouts, that is, the SEF does not know where they are".

“From the second landing, in January, eleven Moroccan citizens, eight are in an uncertain part, the SEF could not even hear them. Our omission is sponsoring the growth of these routes,” he added.

The PSD deputy considers that "the circumstance of not being able to locate and resolve the issue is the worst sign that can be given to these routes, which will grow, because what we are guaranteeing is that they are successful".

Taking into account the four landings that have taken place in recent months, all of migrants from Morocco, and others will not have "been detected", Cristóvão Norte urged the Government "to act, whether from the point of view of the serious incapacity of the SEF, or through the coordination of measures between the authorities involved – SEF, GNR and the Maritime Police – in order to reinforce the conditions for patrolling and to mitigate the risks that are mounting in the Algarve and the country».
