Funeral sector association contests Albufeira Crematorium demands

The Albufeira Crematorium came into operation last March

The Portuguese Association of Professionals of the Funeral Sector (APPSF) contests two of the funeral procedures, in force in Albufeira Crematorium, whereas there are demands that were 'taken in a discretionary and unacceptable way'.

APPSF protests against «two Covid-19 funeral procedures of the Contingency Plan in force at the Albufeira Crematorium», demanded by Cremal, the company that manages the space.

This association contests, in a statement, the "requirement to wrap the body of the deceased in two insulating bags at cremations - for Covid-19 funerals (as required by DGS rules)", but "also for funerals where there is no suspicion of Covid -19 as a cause of death».

"This procedure makes no sense, as it unnecessarily increases funerals for families and inhumanely penalizes funerals," since "families and friends are prevented from seeing the deceased because the bags are not opened."

APPSF is also against the "requirement to wrap the cremation urn in electrical tape before cremation", justifying that the DGS "does not require this procedure".

In addition, it is a procedure that “makes the funeral more expensive, detracts from the cremation ceremony's dignity” and “increases the risk to public health with the pollutant emissions into the atmosphere, resulting from the burning of this plastic material”.

Albufeira Crematorium came into operation last March and it is, until now, the only one existing in the Algarve.
