Algarve's first crematorium is already open in Albufeira

Equipment has the capacity to make 10 to 12 cremations per day

The Albufeira Crematorium, the first in the Algarve, is already in operation. This equipment, located in the space adjacent to the current Vale Pedras cemetery (New Cemetery), has been operational since the 19th.

Paula Ganhão, managing partner of Cremal – Crematoria do Algarve, the company responsible for the crematorium, told the Sul Informação that entry into the operational phase took place after about two months of tests, "started on 13 January".

At this moment, the equipment «is working normally. We are able to make 10 to 12 cremations daily. We have two crematory ovens and a pyrolytic oven”, the latter used to burn funeral and cemetery waste, but which “can also be used to cremate animals”.

The opening of the first crematorium in the Algarve takes place «at a particularly difficult stage, where issues related to public health and which imply a great determination on the part of everyone to maintain a certain normality are raised», motivated by the Covid-19 pandemic, he summarizes to Cremal.

After all, and although there is only one death to mourn in the Algarve, due to this disease, the guidelines of the health authorities determine that whoever dies of Covid-19 should be cremated.

Before the opening of this crematorium, the people of the Algarve «had to go to Ferreira do Alentejo, Setúbal or Quinta do Conde (Sesimbra), with the inconvenience that this entailed». In other words, «this need already existed, which is now more pressing».

«This change came to embody a pressing need for the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo region to create more responses to the deaths that occur, which will make it possible to take advantage of all the capabilities that Cremal has through its environmentally sustainable crematory ovens based on an architectural project very versatile, with capacity for more than two thousand cremations per year», he revealed.

At the moment, part of the facilities of the Albufeira Crematorium, such as the Ecumenical Chapel or other spaces for the public, are not being used, due to the strong restrictions imposed by the declaration of a state of emergency.

“All the cremations we've done so far have been unaccompanied by family members. It has to be like that», revealed Paula Ganhão.

For the same reason, face-to-face appointments are not being made, and the only contacts of this type are those that occur with the various Funeral Homes, always safeguarding all protective measures, both for their employees and for those who have contact with them» .
