Moncarapachense rose to the Portuguese Football Championship (CP), following the reformulation of the format of this competition, announced this Wednesday, May 6, by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF).

The FPF approved "a comprehensive emergency and restructuring plan for the third level of senior football, the result of the reflection of the last six months", including the reformulation of the Portuguese Championship and the creation of the III League.

Thus, in the 2020/21 season, 96 teams will compete in the Portuguese Championship: two coming from the II League (Casa Pia and Cova da Piedade), 70 remaining (such as Louletano, Esperança de Lagos, Armacenenses and Olhanense), 4 new B teams and 20 that come from regional competitions.

It is here, at this last point, that Moncarapachense enters. The team from the municipality of Olhão was the leader of the District of Algarve at the time of cancellation of the competitions due to Covid-19, with 49 points won, and, therefore, was promoted to the Championship of Portugal.

The 96 clubs, which will compete in the Portuguese Championship in 2021/2021, will be organized into eight series, each with 12 teams.

The champions will be selected for access to the II League, while from the 2nd to the 5th, the teams will compete for access to the III League. Finally, the last four will be demoted to the districts.

In a post on Facebook, Moncarapachense has already welcomed this decision to move up to CP. «After an official statement from the FPF, our due merit was recognized, thus ensuring our presence in the Portuguese Championship for the 20/21 season», he says.

"We also take the opportunity to congratulate all those involved in this climb: social bodies, technical team, players, medical department, employees, sponsors and all supporters", he adds.

This reformulation of the Portuguese Championship comes at the same time as the creation of the III Liga, a competition that will start in 2021/2022 and that, from that time on, will replace the Portuguese Championship as an access competition to the II League.

In practice, the CP will continue to exist and will continue to be the race to which teams that win the district championships climb.

From 2021/2022 and, in the three following seasons, the III League and the Portuguese Championship will see the number of clubs reduce to 76.

The FPF says that "it has agreed with the Union of Players that the professionals of these competitions will have the national minimum wage as their base salary"
