Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa recalls that «the outbreak did not disappear by a miracle»

Marcelo gave an interview to Azorean radio

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, recalled today, the day he started the decontamination plan due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which outbreak “did not disappear by a miracle” and has yet to be defeated.

“We still have to beat the pandemic. The outbreak did not disappear by a miracle”, signaled the head of state today, speaking in an interview to Rádio Montanha, from the Azorean island of Pico.

The fight against the pandemic has “gone very well in the Azores, and also very well in Madeira and in many parts of the continent”, but this does not mean that the “end of the road” has been reached, added Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The President of the Republic also recalled the "fundamental role" of the European Union in the response to Covid-19, adding that what is at stake is not a "crisis of a state or a small number of states", but "a crisis of the whole world , and within the world a European crisis”.

The Union must, therefore, be “quick to decide” and must also understand that it has to “decide in a big way”.

“It's not the same thing to decide in June or two months or three months later. It is not the same thing to decide on a significant amount or a smaller amount”, added the head of state.

On Azorean radio, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also declared his desire to return to the island of Pico and the region “as soon as the pandemic passes”.
