Vegetables from the school's educational garden Faro will reach those who need it most

CASA volunteers will harvest the vegetables

The seeds of the Pedagogical Garden of the School of Santo António, in Faro, were launched at the beginning of the school year. 30 students from the special education class and a 5th grade class tended their vegetables with enthusiasm, until the Covid-19 pandemic came and the young farmers were locked up at home. However, the vegetable garden survived and will be the Homeless Support Center (CASA) of Faro to reap its fruits.

In conversation with Sul Informação, Luís Miguel Gomes, teacher of the Special Education class and project coordinator, said that «the idea came at the beginning of the school year, when there was a desire to create something different. The “Pedagogical Garden” is one of the subjects that make up Special Education and we thought of building this vegetable garden, with wooden pallets».

The construction was designed to make life easier for young farmers, since the flowerbeds were raised, so that students with physical difficulties could also participate in the project.

«After the structure, compost supplied by Algar was placed, the vegetable garden was painted and decorated by the students and we had a little of everything: cabbage, lettuce, parsley, peppers», listed Luís Miguel Gomes.

Although this was a project initiated by the Special Education class and students from the 5thE class, “the message was spread and other teachers and students from other classes were collaborating, even with the construction of a scarecrow. The objective was to make the space pleasant to the eye and enhance common well-being», explained the professor.

Everything was going well, until “this situation of the new coronavirus came and the students went home”.

Even so, the vegetable garden survived: “it rained several times and we spoke to school officials who continued to work so that they could take care of the watering and take care of the vegetables”.

But these cabbages and these lettuces have their “days numbered” at Escola de Santo António, as they already have recipients: “we came up with the idea of distributing what we produce to people in need, at this time when there are more people in need. So we decided that CASA volunteers would pick the vegetables and deliver them», revealed Luís Miguel Gomes to our newspaper.

The delivery of vegetables to CASA has not yet been made, but it is coming soon, and the seeds planted at the beginning of the school year will end up give fruits to those who need it most.
