The Minister of Internal Affairs announced today that 433 people were detained during the 45 days of the State of Emergency, adding that these "less than 10 cases a day" meant "a great victory for Portuguese society".

In the parliamentary committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, where he is being heard, Eduardo Cabrita said that, during the three periods of the State of Emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 433 people were detained for violating compulsory confinement, resistance, aggression against the police and violation of the rules on the opening of establishments.

"Less than 10 cases [arrests] per day gives us the dimension of what was the great victory of Portuguese society," the minister told deputies, stressing the transparency in which the State of Emergency took place.

The government official also highlighted the way in which the Portuguese «understood the application of the measures? established.

Eduardo Cabrita considered that the State of Emergency did not mean "the suspension of democracy", nor "the elimination of freedoms".

“There was a clear option not to confuse the State of Emergency with the police state. The strategic and command guidelines adapted by each of the security forces led precisely to favoring a pedagogical intervention and an awareness-raising intervention», he said.

The State of Emergency was in force in Portugal between the 19th of March and the 2nd of May, with the country having entered, last Sunday, a situation of calamity to face the Covid-19 pandemic.

The minister stated that, during the calamity situation, the monitoring structure will continue to function, as happened during the State of Emergency, and will also present a simple report every fortnight to the Assembly of the Republic.
