Covid-19: First days of calamity situation with eight detainees and 42 fines

Eduardo Cabrita says that "mask use in public transport was welcomed significantly" by the population

More than 170 commercial establishments were closed, eight people were arrested and 42 fined for not wearing a mask on public transport in the first days of the disaster due to Covid-19, it was announced this Friday.

At the press conference held after the first meeting of the structure to monitor the calamity situation, the Minister of Internal Administration highlighted that the intervention of the security forces has been guided “almost exclusively by the appeal, awareness and recommendation of best practices”.

According to Eduardo Cabrita, in the first days of the calamity, 177 establishments that violated the rules on the prohibition of opening were closed, namely because they have more than 200 square meters, and 30 other establishments were suspended because they did not meet the requirements on sales to the residence.

The minister said that the security forces had imposed 42 fines related to non-compliance with the use of masks or visors in public transport and identified 830 situations of non-compliance with the use of masks in commercial spaces or public services.

The government official added that eight people were detained, four of them for violating mandatory confinement and another four for resisting the application of the rules that had been established.

Eduardo Cabrita highlighted that “the use of masks in public transport was significantly welcomed” by the population.

In statements to journalists, the minister highlighted "the very relevant role" of the secretaries of State who coordinate between the Government and local structures, allowing Covid-19 diagnostic tests to be carried out on workers in nursing homes.

Eduardo Cabrita revealed that the tests for workers in homes and other residential support structures are completed in the North and Algarve and, next week, will be completed in the regions of Centro and Lisbon and Vale do Tejo.

“This is a process that involved tens of thousands of tests and is in its final phase”, he said, stressing that the testing of workers in the day care centers has also begun.

The minister also said that until next week diagnostic tests will be carried out on Covid-19 for daycare professionals in order to prepare for their return to activity, on 18 May.
