The President of the Republic said today that, according to specialists, it is necessary to maintain the confinement effort in April to take steps towards freedom in May, both in the school system and in economic and social activity.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking to journalists at the end of the third technical meeting on the “Epidemiological situation of Covid-19 in Portugal”, at Infarmed, in Lisbon.

Asked if from his words it can be inferred that, by the will of the technicians, there will be no opening of schools this month of April, the head of state replied: “This can obviously be inferred. There will be no. It is the Prime Minister who will say this on the 9th of April, but from what the specialists said, it is to win the month of May in April, therefore, it is to maintain this effort in April”.

Transmitting the specialists' messages to the media, which he considered to have been “very clear and very impressive”, the President of the Republic declared that “there is a positive trend” in the evolution of the propagation of Covid-19, “slow but positive”.

“The second idea is that if we want to gain freedom in May, we need to gain it in April. That is, to take steps in May of freedom, towards a progressive return to normality, not only in the school system, but also in economic and social activity, it is necessary in April to win May”, he added.
