Government suspends fishing at the weekend

This suspension takes effect this Friday, April 10th

The Ministry of the Sea has just announced that weekend fishing has been suspended as a way of “contributing to the adjustment between supply and demand” during the current Covid-19 pandemic.

This suspension takes effect this Friday, April 10th, and will last until May 31st, always at the weekend.

According to the ordinance published today, for inland waters, under the jurisdiction of the captaincies, and for maritime waters under national jurisdiction "of division 9", fishing is prohibited between 22:00 pm on Friday and 22:00 pm on Sunday and until 31 of May.

During the suspension period and in the aforementioned areas, “the capture, keeping on board and the unloading of fish is prohibited, and vessels licensed exclusively to fish in these waters must remain in port”.

This suspension, however, "does not apply to vessels licensed to operate with surface longlines within the scope of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas".

On the other hand, vessels licensed to operate outside waters under national jurisdiction and sovereignty, which have operated during the aforementioned period, "are prohibited from unloading fish in mainland ports" between 22:00 on Friday and 24:00 on Monday.

The decision, according to the Ministry of the Sea, was taken after "hearing the associations representing fishing, and with a view to ensuring the supply of fish to consumers and the special situation of some local fishing communities."

"The ordinance safeguards that exceptions are authorized in very specific situations", he concludes.
