Alferce Day Center employee is the first Covid-19 case in Monchique

The case is related to the contagion chain of the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School, in Portimão

A woman around 40 years old, an employee at the Alferce Day Center and resident in this parish, is the first confirmed case of Covid-19 in the municipality of Monchique.

The news has been advanced by Jornal de Monchique. José Manuel Gonçalves, president of the Alferce Parish Council, revealed to the local newspaper that the woman is, however, outside the municipality, "in social isolation, still with some symptoms, but recovering".

Contacted by Sul Informação, Rui André, president of the Chamber, explained that the case arose from the transmission chain of the Manuel Teixeira Gomes School, in Portimão, since the lady's son was a student of the teacher. who died a victim of Covid-19.

The Day Center employee, like her son, who never showed symptoms, completed the 14 days of quarantine, then returned to work, where she provided home support to users for four days, "always wearing gloves and a mask", according to mayor.

The symptoms appeared after a day off, on March 26, which led the woman to contact the health authorities and to isolate herself in an apartment in Portimão.

The Covid-19 test "was only carried out on April 1st and the results arrived yesterday", according to Rui André, who adds that "the lady had mild symptoms and is now apparently well", remaining in confinement.

The infected woman's colleagues are still in quarantine, and the 14 days after the last contact will end tomorrow. As a precaution, employees will remain socially distant until the 9th, Thursday, and will only return to work on the 10th, added the mayor.

Rui André assured our newspaper that «none of the employees or users of the Day Center showed symptoms of the disease», but, even so, the City Council has already contacted the ABC – Algarve Biomedical Center, «so that everyone can be tested».

Until employees can return to work, “it is the Municipality of Monchique that is ensuring the preparation of meals for users. These meals are then distributed by employees of the municipality, since the Day Center is closed», concludes Rui André.
