Two tons of cockles seized in Olhão

Bivalves were caught outside the legal period

Two tons of cockles, with an estimated commercial value of 6 euros, were seized by the Coastal Control Unit (UCC) of Olhão, in this municipality, on the night of 28 to 29 April. The bivalves were returned to Ria Formosa.

According to the UCC, the military "detected eight men, aged between 41 and 66, picking up cockles outside the legally fixed daily periods", that is, "between sunrise and sunset", during an action of oversight.

When they became aware of the presence of the authorities, the men tried to flee, "using their own boats, but were intercepted by the maritime means of the UCC", a unit of the GNR.

Suspects incur a fine that could amount to close to 25 thousand euros.
