Covid-19: Global Climate Strike Leaves the Streets and Goes Digital

Digital Weather Strike Scheduled for Today

The Friday's for Future movement, launched by the young Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, promotes today another edition of the already traditional World Climate Strike, which, given the Covid-19 pandemic, exchanges street demonstrations for digital initiatives.

Originally launched as a movement to denounce the inaction of politicians and governments on climate change, the climate strike scheduled for today is also intended to remind, according to Friday's for Future, that despite Covid-19's health crisis, “the climate crisis remains A reality".

“The climate crisis remains a reality and, despite being formally declared by many institutions, it is still not recognized as such by some leaders, who choose to ignore scientific indications through inaction”, says a statement released by several activist organizations associated with the Friday's for Future movement.

Environmentalists say that once the declared state of emergency over the Covid-19 pandemic ends, the return to normality must "put the environment and people at the center and take into account criteria of social and climate justice."

Today, the digital version of the demonstrations, which until now took environmental activists to the streets of cities all over the world, should materialize in projections of shadows and images on the facades of buildings, which will later be shared on social networks.

The organizers of the initiative also called for, in times of confinement and social distance, collective actions to be transformed into individual demonstrations on the balconies.
