Covid-19: Costa says the government will tighten restrictions on movement "a little bit"

Prime Minister went to Cristina Ferreira's program on SIC

The prime minister said, this Wednesday, April 1st, that the Government will "tighten a little" and clarify the circulation rules, especially during the Easter period, and warned that April will be a "very dangerous" month in terms of Covid-19 propagation.

António Costa announced this step by the Government in Cristina Ferreira's program on SIC, after being asked how the State of Emergency in Portugal would be extended for another 15 days.

“We are going to adopt clearer measures so that people understand that, during the Easter period, they cannot even walk around and must stay in their permanent residence. I think we're going to have to squeeze a little bit, giving a clearer signal that it's not really time for us to walk from one side to the other», declared the prime minister.

António Costa also said that the Government is preparing a solution based on Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) to ensure classes during the period when schools will be closed due to Covid-19.

"For all educational levels, we are working on a safety net solution, because we know that many people do not have access to the contents and classes that have been being taught online by computer," said the prime minister.

The executive leader then specified that the solution being prepared "is based on Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), which is accessible to everyone".

“But it's a very difficult thing. When there was tele-school [70's and 80's] there were half a dozen subjects, but now there are dozens of subjects and it's very difficult to organize grids», he explained.

Faced with the fear of families and students of missing the school year because of the suspension of classroom classes, the executive leader ruled out this possibility.

“We have to save the year, assuring everyone the greatest justice in evaluation, but also the best opportunities to have educational access, because school is not just about evaluation. It is also the set of learning that is acquired. This is an absolutely extraordinary [school] year," he stressed.

In a conversation with Cristina Ferreira, in terms of education, António Costa insisted on reinforcing the idea that his executive intends to create this safety net based on DTT «to increase accessibility» to classes.

In parallel, «through the schools, we will continue to develop all the digital platforms that have been used. And we are going to study as much as possible the opportunities for the school to be able to reopen as much as possible», he said, although without putting forward any expectations in terms of the calendar.
