Tavira's Agricultural Experimentation Center (CEA) will no longer be cut in half, after the Infrastructures of Portugal project to build a road that crossed the property had obtained a Declaration of Unfavorable Environmental Impact from the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA). ).

It is, in this way, put aside – at least for now – a work that was much contested and that motivated the creation of the Citizens' Movement for the Defense of CEA Tavira, who swore to use "all the legal means at his disposal" to prevent the progress of the work.

In cause, as Sul Informação did it in february, was a project by Infraestruturas de Portugal to build a 20-metre-wide road on land that now belongs to this experimental center, where there is a collection of traditional fruit trees made up of endemic Algarve varieties that, in some cases, can only be found there. be found.

This new road is designed as part of the process of electrification of the Algarve Line between Faro and Vila Real de Santo António, which provides for the creation of a crossing that will allow deactivating the level crossing next to the CP de Tavira Station.

despite guarantees given to our newspaper by Pedro Valadas Monteiro, Regional Director for Agriculture and Fisheries of the Algarve, that the work would not call into question the collection of fruit trees or any natural heritage of the center, not even the built heritage, the protest of the citizens did not diminish in tone.

The controversy eventually reached the Assembly of the Republic and it was precisely in a response to Rui Cristina, PSD deputy elected by the Algarve, that the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing revealed that «the Environmental Impact Declaration of the project now states that there are no favorable conditions to issue a decision in favor of the technical solution presented by Infraestruturas de Portugal».

The member of the Government anticipated the APA itself, taking into account that on the portal Participa.pt the process remains under review, with no note of a final decision.

According to the social democrat parliamentarian, "Infraestruturas de Portugal, responsible for the project, recognized that an alternative route would be necessary for car traffic to enter the city, so the CEA is currently safe."
