ABC teaches how to make masks with kitchen roll paper

The mask should be used «in a logic of “I protect you and you protect me”»

O Central Biomedical Algarve (ABC), which has been at the forefront of fighting Covid-19, issued a recommendation that teaches how to make a community-use mask out of kitchen roll.

ABC, a consortium that brings together the University of Algarve and the Hospital and University Center of the Algarve, explains how «the analysis of the various studies carried out so far leads us to advise the widespread use of a mask made with a double layer of cushion fabric or TShirt fabric (100% cotton) and double layer kitchen roll paper».

«The double layer of cushion fabric or T-Shirt fabric (100% cotton) should be sewn in order to mimic the surgical mask, that is, with pleats that all orient downwards and presenting two small folds at the top and bottom, which support the internal placement of kitchen towels'.

«The double layer of kitchen paper should be made in such a way that the orientation of the sheets is crossed in relation to one another (see representation below). The hem at the top of the mask should contain a small wire, allowing the mask to fit to the nose», he says.

In this recommendation, the ABC explains how «the design of the ideal mask for use by the general population should take into account the degree of filtration of the mask, its degree of breathability and comfort (in order to be supported for long periods of time), the possibility of maintaining the mask without deterioration of these characteristics and being made with cheap and commonly used materials».

Moreover, the ABC alerts to the fact that the mask's contamination can be a “transmission vehicle, due to the potential accumulation of viral particles coming from the outside and the possibility of self-inoculation”.

Therefore, «we propose that the layer in direct contact with the user's mouth (kitchen paper) be discarded every three hours of continuous use and that the outer part of the mask (100% cotton fabric) be washed with soap and water in the end of each day”, he concludes.

This is because, the recommendation concludes, the mask should be used «in a logic of “I protect you and you protect me”», to which «the reduction of direct contact between the hands and the nose should also contribute. or mouth'.
