238 kilos of cockles, valued at 750 euros, were seized in Olhão and returned to their natural habitat by the Coastal Control Unit (UCC) of the GNR in that city, yesterday, the 21st.

«During an inspection aimed at the preservation of marine species, safeguarding the fauna and flora of coastal areas, as well as the illegal capture of bivalves, an individual was detected carrying bivalves from a vessel to a vehicle, not showing any type registration document', according to the UCC.

The 46-year-old man, who was surprised while carrying out this operation “on the banks of the Ria Fomrosa, was identified.

“An administrative offense was issued for lack of documentation, the infraction of which is punishable by a fine of up to 3740 euros. The seized bivalves, as they are still alive, were returned to their natural habitat», concluded the GNR unit.
