The 1st patient infected with Covid-19 in Portugal died

"We will have more deaths from this disease in the coming days," admitted the Director-General of Health

The first patient infected with Covid-19 in Portugal has died, the Health Minister has just announced. He is an 80-year-old man, "with several associated comorbidities", who "has been hospitalized for several days" at the Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon.

After conveying her condolences to the family of the deceased patient, Minister Marta Temido thanked «the team at Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte, namely the Hospital de Santa Maria» for all the work they have done.

However, there are 18 people hospitalized in Intensive Care, said the director general of Health. "We will have more deaths from this disease in the coming days," he admitted.

"It's a heavy moment", "a moment of discipline", added Marta Temido. "Our life in society becomes different".

The minister admits that "there is a risk of our society becoming disorganized". However, he warned, "we cannot interrupt our social life, we cannot run out of bread, without waste collection," stressing that adaptations must be made to the current moment.

"Today's fate must make everyone reflect on what is expected of each one of us," said the minister.

Asked about the new indication of the World Health Organization to test populations as much as possible, Marta Temido assured that "we are adapting our practices".

“We are ensuring that we have tests to be able to test whenever there is suspicion”, he stressed, adding that “in terms of personal protective equipment we also have to be judicious”.
