Marta Temido, Minister of Health, this Saturday, March 28, estimated that the «maximum incidence of infection» with Covid-19, in Portugal, should happen «at the end of May».

At a press conference, after the release of today's data, the government official said that this postponement of the peak shows "that the containment measures that we have all taken, such as staying at home unless many of us go to work, are being effective".

This is, well, good news because it will not allow suffocate both the National Health Service, since cases should be more spaced in time.

“The number of patients we will have depends on the behavior of each one of us. We have to live this spring and this Easter differently. We will not be able to be together as we anticipated, but this is an essential condition for us to be together again», he said.

The estimate that the peak of the disease will only be in May had already been advanced yesterday, March 27, by Graça Freitas, general director of Health, noting that this is a forecast.

Returning to Marta Temido, the minister said, at today's conference, that it is expected that we will have, in Portugal, «a high number of cases of Covid-19 infection».

This puts “enormous pressure on the healthcare system and on all of us. We have to do what we can to face as much as possible what awaits us», he said.

Marta Temido assured, however, that the entire NHS is “responding and improving preparation”. Examples of this are the recent reinforcements of civil protection equipment.

With regard to the tests, the government official added that their use is being expanded, referring to the fact that "60 tests" had already arrived, in addition to the donations of "various swabs".

“We have a report that around 40 tests were carried out between March 1st and March 26th,” explained Marta Temido.

«The rule of test, test, test it is also our priority. But we know that this rule has, also from the WHO, a recommendation on what the priorities should be in case of lack of tests, and we always try to follow them», he concluded.
