Government orders bars to close from 21 pm

Closing from 21 pm takes effect today

The Government today decreed the closure of all bars in Portugal, daily, from 21 pm, in a measure that will remain in effect until 00 April. On that date, it will be re-evaluated.

In a statement sent to the newsrooms, the Government announces that the measure follows the "need for additional measures" given the increase in the number of cases of infection by Covid-19 in the country.

«The epidemiological situation worldwide», «the increase in cases of infection in Portugal (which has already reached 169 cases), with the progressive expansion of its geographical expression» and also «the need to contain possible lines of contagion in order to control the epidemiological situation in Portugal” are some of the reasons given by the Government to tighten the measures.

The decision was also influenced by "the assessment carried out by the National Civil Protection Commission at the meetings held on March 3 and 9", "the decisions taken by the Council of Ministers on March 12", "the declaration of the Alert Situation throughout the national territory and also "the need for additional measures with a view to fulfilling the objectives that justified the Alert Situation."

The two joint order signed by the ministers of Economy (Pedro Siza Vieira), of Internal Administration (Eduardo Cabrita) and of Health (Marta Temido).
