Covid-19: Government says gloves and masks are not to be put in recycling points

Gloves and masks should go to unsorted garbage containers, warns the Government

Gloves and masks must be placed in containers for unsorted waste, that is, non-recyclable waste, warned the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action, as part of the measures to contain the pandemic by covid-19.

"Gloves and masks should not be placed in recycling bins", reads a press release from the Ministry of the Environment, which advises that they be placed in "containers for unsorted waste".

In view of the increase in the number of gloves and masks placed in the recycling bins, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action warns the population that these objects are never placed in the recycling bins, which are «only dedicated to packaging, glass and paper/cardboard waste. ».

The Ministry of Environment urges citizens to comply with the indications on the correct packaging and forwarding of their waste and to consult the available indications online.

“Collaboration with municipal urban hygiene services and urban waste management systems is essential to ensure that these services continue to be carried out safely and effectively”, concludes the ministry led by João Pedro Matos Fernandes.
