AMAL will buy 30 fans to help fight Covid-19

These 30 fans will join the nearly 60 that CHUA had already programmed.

AMAL – Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve is going to buy 30 ventilators to give to the Hospital and University Center of the Algarve (CHUA) with the aim of strengthening the fight against the new coronavirus pandemic.

The decision, announced in a statement just released, was taken this Monday, March 16, after a meeting between AMAL, CHUA and the Regional Health Administration (ARS) of the Algarve.

These 30 fans will join the nearly 60 that CHUA had already programmed.

«At this meeting, Paulo Morgado, president of ARS Algarve, and Ana Paula Gonçalves, president of the Board of Directors of CHUA, reported on the measures that were, and are being, implemented in the Hospitals of Faro and Portimão», reads a statement.

In this phase of mitigation, those responsible also announced “the creation of specific care services in the two hospitals' emergencies and in the primary care health units. Teleconsultations were also implemented and the number of non-urgent surgeries was reduced”, he adds.

Those responsible again “appeal for the need to sensitize the population to reduce the need for travel to health services, stressing that 80% of the population infected by the new coronavirus will not need hospital care, as it is expected that they will have mild symptoms and that they can be followed from home», says AMAL.

“The concern is now focused on the remaining 20%, who will need extra care. It is estimated that 5% of the total of those infected will need ventilation, and the rental of more equipment of this nature has already been contracted”, he adds.

«Collaboration with private health units has also been articulated, in order to meet possible needs for equipment or accommodation of patients with other pathologies, because, at this stage, all patients with Covid-19 will be treated in the National Health Service », concludes the statement.

For now, and according to a bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health, the Algarve already has 14 cases of people infected with the new coronavirus.
