São Brás organizes free training on “Census of Butterflies in Portugal”

Local authority embraced "recently, a new mission, defense of the butterflies"

A free training on “Census of Butterflies in Portugal” will help to get to know these insects better in São Brás de Alportel, on the 7th of March, a Saturday.

This action, which will take place at the Interpretation and Environmental Education Center “Quinta do Peral”, is aimed at “the general public and those interested in voluntarily collaborating in the motorization of daytime butterflies in the country”.

«During the morning, volunteers will be introduced to the Butterfly Census process, learn to identify the different species of butterflies and will have the opportunity to go on a field trip. For the afternoon, a moment is reserved for counting and identifying the butterflies found on the morning route, which will be registered on a platform of the initiative», according to the City Council of São Brás de Alportel.

The municipality claims to have "recently embraced a new mission, defense of butterflies", by integrating the Route of Census of Butterflies in Portugal, "in an important contribution towards better knowledge and valorization of these insects".

The Butterfly Census is a project by Tagis – Center for the Conservation of Butterflies in Portugal, «which consists in the regular counting of diurnal butterflies in fixed routes, following a standardized methodology, which is used throughout Europe and allows to generate a huge volume of data, thus detecting trends in the conservation status of butterflies and their habitats'.
