São Brás de Alportel wants airport of Faro change your name to Gago Coutinho

The Chamber of Brás de Alportel went public to defend the attribution of the name of Gago Coutinho to the Airport of Faro, in the week in which 151 years since the birth and 61 years since the death of the aviator who, in the company of Sacadura Cabral, made in 1922 the 1st air trip over the South Atlantic.

Admiral Gago Coutinho was born on February 17, 1869 and died on February 18, 1959. Yesterday, the São Brasense municipality marked these dates and recalled this «greatest personality in the history of Portugal in the world, defending the attribution of his name to the International Airport of Faro».

«The defense of the attribution of the name of the admiral who left an undeniable mark in the history of international aviation has long been a struggle assumed by the municipality of São Brás de Alportel, where an artistic replica by Carlos Correia de Oliveira was recently installed, of the “Santa Cruz” seaplane, aboard which Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral reached Brazil in 1922», according to the City Council of São Brás de Alportel.

«After the position taken by the City Council, in a unanimous vote, more recently, the Municipal Assembly of São Brás de Alportel also unanimously approved a motion defending the attribution of the name of Admiral Gago Coutinho to the International Airport of Faro», added the municipality.

The São Brasense Municipal Assembly joined not only the City Council, but also «the community initiative and the recent demonstration presented by a group of citizens headed by the illustrious São Brasense Almirante Martins Guerreiro, having urged the Government to hold the fair. and deserved tribute to Admiral Gago Coutinho, the greatest figure in Portuguese Aviation who honored Portugal, the Portuguese Navy and World Aviation and gives his patron name to the Airport of Faro, enhancing this infrastructure that opens the doors of the Algarve and Portugal to the world».

The motion was addressed to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing and the director of the International Airport of Faro, "waiting at this moment due analysis of this proposal".
