New GNR Headquarters in Aljezur and old facilities in Odeceixe led to a meeting between the Chamber and the government

New barracks will cost 1,5 million euros

The construction of the new barracks in Aljezur to house the GNR and its Coastal Control Unit, as well as the impasse in the exchange of buildings in Odeceixe, where GNR is located, and the old building on Odeceixe beach, were the topics covered in a meeting, in Lisbon, on the 10th, between the mayor of Aljezurense City Council and the Deputy Secretary of State and Internal Administration.

In addition to Secretary of State Luís Antero, the meeting, made at the request of the Algarve Chamber, was attended by several officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and military officials from these areas, namely, Marcelo Carvalho, secretary general of the MAI, Paulo Ferreira, director of SGMAI Services , Manuel Vieira, deputy, Sara Frias, specialist technician, Candice Vilares, and lieutenants-colonel Paulo Machado and António Veríssimo.

It was possible to discuss issues related to the project for the new building in Aljezur, which is now being considered by the services of the Ministry of Internal Administration. According to the City Council, everything points to the project being ready by the end of October.

At that time, the inter-ministerial contract will be signed, so that the work can be put out to tender, at a cost of around 1,5 million euros.

Another issue discussed was the impasse, which has been going on for about 12 years, the exchange of buildings in Odeceixe and the situation of marked degradation of the former Fiscal Guard building in Praia de Odeceixe, «it being necessary and urgent to find a solution to this situation. ».

Another topic addressed at the meeting was the means of these security forces on the ground. The fact is that, underlines the Municipality of Aljezur, both the GNR and its Coastal Control Unit are part of "a territory of extensive dimensions, with a great variation in population throughout the year, making the mission of these soldiers even more demanding."

José Gonçalves, president of the municipality of Aljezurense, expressed “concern and availability in the search for solutions that can contribute to increasing the safety of people and goods in our municipality”.

On the part of the Secretary of State, "full commitment to the resolution of the issues addressed was manifested", guarantees the City Council.
