Maritime Police on mission in Greece saved 2251 migrants in 2019

The Maritime Police is part of the POSEIDON operation, under the aegis of the European agency FRONTEX

In 2019, Maritime Police teams that are on mission in Greece, detected and safely removed 2251 migrants from the waters of the Aegean Sea, «of different nationalities who, in this irregular and risky migratory flow by sea, are trying to enter Europe by crossing between the coast of Turkey and the Greek islands», revealed the National Maritime Authority.

During 2019, the Maritime Police team on a mission to the island of Lesbos carried out 330 patrols at sea, saving 2170 migrants, totaling 2113 hours of navigation.

The Maritime Police's Coastal Surveillance vehicle supported 43 rescues, carrying out 310 surveillance actions and a total of 2004 mission hours, until the end of November.

The Maritime Police team, which has reinforced, since December 02, its presence in border control in Greece, on the island of Samos, saved 81 migrants, carrying out 30 patrols at sea, totaling 186 hours of navigation.

The Maritime Police's Coastal Surveillance vehicle in Samos carried out 30 surveillance actions, totaling 186 hours of mission and supporting two maritime rescue missions for migrants.

By the end of 2019, the Maritime Police integrated in the POSEIDON operation, since 2014, had already detected and safely removed more than 7000 migrants from the waters of the Aegean Sea.

The Maritime Police is part of operation POSEIDON, under the aegis of the European agency FRONTEX and in support of the Greek coastguard, with the objective of controlling and guarding the Greek maritime and external borders of the European Union, in the fight against cross-border crime, within the scope of European coastguard functions.
