Algarve fish auctions are the fastest growing in the whole country

VRSA auction exceeded 14 million euros of fish sales value and more than 6,6 tonnes of fish were traded in Quarteira

The Algarve fish auctions were the ones that grew the most in 2019, across the country, almost doubled the amount of fish sold and increased the value of sales by more than 15% compared to 2018, revealed Docapesca today.

The past year was positive, according to data released by the company, mainly in terms of financial return, since "the historic value of 212,3 million euros" in sales at the Portuguese auctions was reached.

This record was achieved with strong help from the Algarve fish auctions, where the value of the fish sold rose to 53,1 million euros, more than a quarter of the national total.

In this case, there was an increase of 6 million euros compared to 2018, a year in which the sales volume had been 46,1 million euros and in which there had already been an increase compared to the previous year (45,2 million ).

By auction, Vila Real de Santo António was once again the one with the highest sales value, 14 million euros, representing an increase of 7,6% compared to 2018.

Also highlighted are the auctions of Portimão, with 9 million euros (+26,6%), Quarteira, with 8,9 million euros (+26,2%), and Olhão, with 8,2 million of euros (+29,4%).

Next come Sagres (5,1 million, without variation), Lagos (2,4 million, +21,3%), Fuzeta (2,3 million, +12%), Santa Luzia (2,2 million, +22,8 .987%) and Albufeira (18,3 thousand euros, -XNUMX%).

Compared to 2017, the year for which data were requested from Docapesca by Sul Informação, there were only decreases, in 2019, in Portimão and Sagres – from 9,1 to 9 million, in the first case, and from 5,3 to 5,1 million, in the second.

The biggest increases were in VRSA (from 11,7 to 14 million), in Quarteira (from 6,4 to 8,9 million) and in Olhão (from 6 to 8,1 million).

At the same time, there was a strong increase in the amount of fish traded in the nine auctions in the Algarve. In 2019, there were 20,5 thousand tons of fish sold, compared to 2018 thousand in 11,9.

In this field, Quarteira was the auction that stood out the most, with a growth of 147%, from the 2,7 thousand tons sold in 2018 to 6,6 thousand tons in 2019 (in 2017, there were 2,2 thousand tons).

Other auctions that had strong growth last year were Portimão, with 5,1 thousand tons and an increase of 77,6% (4,6 thousand tons in 2017), Olhão, with 4,7 thousand tons and 63,8 more .2,1% (2017 thousand in 1,3), Sagres, with 10,2 thousand tons and an increase of 2017% (thousand tons in 1,3) and Vila Real de Santo António, with 11,1 thousand tons and growth of 900 .2017% (XNUMX tons in XNUMX).

In the remaining auctions, there was year-on-year growth in Lagos (+57,5%, to 630 tons), Santa Luzia (+42,2%, 324 tons) and Fuzeta (+24,2%, 400 tons). At the auction in Albufeira, the amount of fish traded fell from 163 tonnes in 2018 to 158 tonnes in 2019, that is, there was a drop of 3,1%.

"At national level, the most relevant species in terms of sales value were common octopus, sardines, horse mackerel, anchovy and mackerel," added Docapesca.

The company also revealed that it has obtained an extension of the certification of the food safety management system for the auctions in Viana do Castelo, Aveiro and Vila Real de Santo António, and currently has seven certified establishments.

"This auction certification process will be reinforced, with a view to the certification of a total of 10 auctions in 2020", he announced.
