Children travel by minicar to the operating room at Hospital Lusíadas de Albufeira

Measure aims to reduce the anxiety of children who will undergo surgery

Children undergoing surgery at Hospital Lusíadas Albufeira will be able to drive minicars, some of them electric, to the operating room.

This measure by the Albufeirense health unit aims to "reduce children's anxiety before the operation."

“A study, published in the British Journal of Anesthesia, revealed that the fact that children drive a toy car from their bedroom to the operating room, instead of being transported on the usual stretcher, reduces anxiety in pre-aged children. undergoing surgery, comparable to the effect of taking midazolam (a drug with a calming effect). In the same study, it was found that 60% of children undergoing anesthesia and surgery revealed significant anxiety, a problem that is associated with traumatic consequences in the short and long term», according to the Lusíadas Saúde group, which has the support of BMcar in this project.

«The surgery and all the steps that precede it are moments of great anxiety, both for the child and for their parents. Aware of the importance of humanized and increasingly personalized care, we seek daily to find solutions capable of improving our customers' experience. This moment that we now provide to children has a proven beneficial effect in reducing anxiety in the preoperative period and is in line with our mission, which is based on values that go far beyond medical care alone," said Eduarda Reis, neonatologist and president of the Medical Council of Lusíadas Saúde.
