Quarteira celebrates Our Lady of Conception

This Sunday is a public holiday for being the Day of the Immaculate Conception (December 8)

Quarteira hosts this Sunday, December 8th, the traditional Feast in Honor of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, whose highlight is the boat trip of the patron saint.

The celebrations start on Saturday, the 7th, at 21 pm, with a procession of candles with the image of Our Lady towards the Church of S. Pedro do Mar.

On the 8th, the highlight of this Festival, the morning starts with a dawn, at 9:00 am. At 14 pm, there will be mass at the Church of S. Pedro do Mar, followed, from 00 pm, onwards, with a solemn procession with the image of Our Lady, towards Porto de Abrigo.

The highlight of this festival is the Padroeira's boat trip, accompanied by many faithful, especially by fishermen who, with their decorated boats, show all the devotion and affection for their patron.

The blessing of the sea and boats is followed by the return to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The small image of Porto de Abrigo returns to its little chapel.

Between 18:00 and 23:00, there will be a gastronomy space in front of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, as well as a musical moment with Rita Melo and Bruno Neves, sale of branches and auction of offers.

The Feast in honor of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Quarteira is a tradition with ancient cultural roots, as the image was found in nets by fishermen for more than 200 years, being deeply integrated in the fishing community and in all Quarteirans.

The history of the small chapel of Porto de Pesca goes, which, in the same year it was built, protected the boats from a violent storm that hit the Algarve coast, despite the material damage caused.

"The Festival of Nossa Senhora da Conceição has become, over the years, not only an important religious event but also an attraction for many national and foreign visitors who are present on this national holiday in the city of Quarteira," says the Chamber of Loulé.
