Portimão will host the 2021 European Museum of the Year Award

Portimão, as host municipality for EMYA 2021, will be officially announced in Cardiff, Wales, next May

In 2021, the Portimão Museum will host the most relevant annual event for the attribution of the “European Museum of the Year” awards from European museology, the EMYA-“European Museum of the Year Award”.

This novelty follows the Partnership Agreement between the EMF-European Museum Forum (European Museum Forum) and the Municipality of Portimão, signed last November 23, by Jette Sandahl, President of the EMF Board, and Isilda Gomes, president of the Portimão City Council, which marked the beginning of the formalization of the candidacy of Portimão and its Museum, as the places chosen for the delivery of this European award.

Portimão, as host municipality for EMYA 2021, will be officially announced in Cardiff, the capital of Wales, on 2 May, during the course of EMYA 2020, which will take place at the National Museum of Wales, in that city in the United Kingdom .

The partnership now established foresees that, in May 2021, the “European Innovation Conference in Museums” and the “European Museum of the Year Awards Ceremony” will be two important moments of the EMYA 2021 in Portimão.

For these awards you can apply and register, until March 2020, in https://europeanforum.museum/applications/, all European museums, from the 47 countries belonging to the Council of Europe, which have been opened or have been substantially renovated since January 2017, as potential candidates for winners in the seven award categories, of which the “European Museum of the Year Award” stands out and the “Council of Europe Museum Award”.

Since receiving the “Council of Europe Museum” award in 2010, the Museum of Portimão has been establishing a close European connection with the EMF-European Museum Forum.

This connection has been maintained through the participation of its scientific director José Gameiro, since 2011, as a member of the EMYA Jury, having even held the presidency between 2015 and 2018.

In 2018, another partnership agreement, between the Municipality of Portimão and the European Museum Forum, allowed the installation of the headquarters of the EMF secretariat and its historical archive in the Portimão Museum and its Documentation Center.

In this way, it's all the history of this European Award and the documentation of hundreds of candidate museums, nominated and awarded, over the 42 years of its existence (1977-2019), which from Liverpool, Berlin and Milan will come to Portimão, where they will be organized and prepared for subsequent public access.

As a result of this partnership, the “Museu Portimão” award was also created, a new category through which the aim is to annually distinguish the most welcoming and accessible museum in Europe.

The first edition of this award was awarded to the Brunel's “SS Great Britain” Museum, Bristol, during the awards ceremony in 2019, in the city of Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
