The European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) Jury, composed of members from 10 countries, will meet at the Portimão Museum, on November 22nd and 23rd, to select the candidate museums for the different award categories, namely the award Council of Europe Museum, which was won by the Portimonense museum in 2010.

The EMF-European Museum Forum «is the European association responsible, since 1977, for the organization of the two most important and prestigious prizes in European museology, namely the European Museum of the Year (EMYA) and the Council of Europe (CoE) Museum prize» , explains the Chamber of Portimão.

At this meeting, «about 41 museums will be under analysis, from the 47 countries that make up the Council of Europe, among which six will be distinguished with nominations for two main categories: European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) and Council of Europe Museum Award (CoE)», explains the municipality.

Candidates for other awards and special mentions will also be selected, such as the Silletto Award, «which recognizes excellence in working with the local community and the involvement of volunteers and museum friends, the Kenneth Hudson Award, awarded in recognition of the most unexpected and daring museum or a museum that challenges the normal perception of the role of museums in society, the Special Mention for Sustainability».

Other Special Mentions will also be awarded “to museums that demonstrate excellence in particular aspects of their work”.

The Portimão Chamber recalls that, in July this year, it signed a collaboration protocol with the EMF – European Museum Forum with a view to a partnership aimed at installing the Administrative Secretariat and the General Archive of the EMYA / European Museum of the Year Award ( European Museum of the Year Award) at the Portimão Museum.

This cooperation project also included the creation of a new EMYA European Prize, called the “Portimão Museum Prize”, aimed at distinguishing among the candidates “The most welcoming and accessible European Museum”, whose trophy and diploma will be presented annually at the ceremony. awarding of the EMYA prizes.

The Portimão Museum is open on Tuesdays from 14:30 pm to 18:00 pm and from Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm. On Saturdays there is free entry from 10:00 am to 14:00 pm.
