Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins is the new director of the Annals of the Municipality of Faro, after Joaquim Romero Magalhães, former boss of this publication, have died at the end of last year.

Jurist, 67, invited full professor at the Faculty of Law of Universidade Lusíada and the Superior Institute of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Lisbon and executive member of the Board of Directors of the Gulbenkian Foundation, Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins, who accessed this Thursday Thursday, December 12, at the invitation addressed to him by Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro.

A personality of Portuguese culture and politics, Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins was vice-president of the UNESCO National Commission (1988-1994), president of the National Culture Center between 2002 and 2016, and a distinguished academic at the Portuguese Academy of History (elected on July 6, 2015). He was also distinguished with honorary doctorates from Universidade Lusíada, Universidade Aberta and Instituto Superior de Ciencias Sociales e Politica.

In addition, he was a deputy in the Assembly of the Republic for seven legislatures, occupying as an independent secretary of State for Educational Administration, from 1995 to 1999, Minister of Education, until 2000, Minister of the Presidency, from 2000 to 2002, and Minister of Finance, between 2001 and 2002

. He was also president of the Court of Auditors between 2005 and 2015 and, inherently, of the Council for the Prevention of Corruption, from 2008 to 2015.

His merit is recognized indoors and outdoors, having received numerous awards, including Grand Official of the Order of Infante D. Henrique de Portugal; Commander of the Royal Order of Isabel the Catholic of Spain; Grand Cross of the National Order of the Cruzeiro do Sul do Brasil; Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honor of France; Grand Officer of the Polish Order of Merit; Grand Cross of the Military Order of Our Lord Jesus Christ; Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique; Corresponding Member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences; Effective Member of the Academy of the Navy.

He is the author of a vast bibliography of which the following stand out: Lessons on the Portuguese Economic Constitution (two volumes); Oliveira Martins, a Biography; Citizens' School (two editions); The European Enigma; Education or Barbarism?; Portugal – Institutions and Facts (English, French and Chinese editions); Audacity of the Modern Country; The New European Constitutional Treaty; Portugal – Identity and Difference (three editions); Heritage, Heritage and Memory (two editions); On the Path of Fernão Mendes – Portuguese journeys around the world (two editions).

Created in 1969, Anais do Município had as its first director and mentor José António Pinheiro e Rosa. The professor was succeeded by the sociologist and journalist Libertário dos Santos Viegas, "who continued with determination the periodical publication of this unavoidable title", recalls the municipality.

In 2009, it was the turn of historian and academic Joaquim Romero Magalhães to assume the direction, a position he held until the day of his death, on December 24, 2018, «leaving published magnificent editions, including the XLI, commemorating the 50 years of the Annals, largely prepared by you».

«With Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins, the confirmation also arrives that the destinations of this publication of recognized merit remain, thus, in good hands and on the long-established path of preservation and affirmation of the Culture, Heritage and History of Faro and of its Region», concludes the municipality.
