Sotavento Health Centers Project wins national award

The Proximity Respiratory Rehabilitation Program (PRRP) of the Sotavento Group of Health Centers (ACeS) won this week the Luísa Soares Branco Award, promoted by Associação Respira, in the amount of 2500 euros.

The initiative, developed in partnership with the University Hospital Center of the Algarve and the Municipalities of Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, aims to "improve the quality of life of people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)", according to the Regional Administration of Health (ARS) of the Algarve.

«Reducing symptoms associated with respiratory diseases, such as respiratory distress and tiredness, improving physical capacity, reducing anxiety and depression, improving the quality of life and increasing the capacity of people with COPD to manage the disease are the main goals. of the sessions promoted by the multidisciplinary team, consisting of Physiotherapists, Nurses, Senior Sports Technicians, Doctors of various specialties (Pneumology, General and Family Medicine and Dentistry), Psychologists, Nutritionists, Senior Social Work Technicians, Senior Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technicians - Cardiopneumology and Superior Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technicians – Radiology and who work in an intervention based on three pillars: clinical assessment and control, exercise and patient education», described the same entity.

The program sessions take place three times a week at the Dr. Eduardo Mansinho Municipal Pavilion and at the Vila Real de Santo António Sports Complex and have an average of ten people.

Users who benefit from the sessions are referred by family doctors or by the pulmonologist, after being diagnosed with the disease. Patients, family members, caregivers and anyone interested in finding out more about the ACeS Sotavento PRRP can inquire from their GP or pulmonologist.

Paulo Morgado, the chairman of the Board of Directors of ARS Algarve, considered that this award represents «the recognition of the relevant and innovative work that our professionals have developed in this area», stressing that «this program is committed to proximity and articulation with communities it contributed to improving the quality of life of these patients, who, due to the constraints of their illness and increased difficulties in travel, otherwise would not have access to this type of support».

The Luísa Soares Branco Award is the result of a partnership between Respira – Portuguese Association of People with COPD and other Chronic Respiratory Diseases and Linde Saúde, is held every two years and aims to distinguish institutions that have distinguished themselves in the provision of healthcare services and services to chronic respiratory patients, especially those with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The ACeS Sotavento Proximity Respiratory Rehabilitation Program was also one of the projects selected to participate in the exhibition of scientific posters at the 13th Edition of the Meeting of Good Practices in Health organized by the Portuguese Association for Hospital Development (APDH), in partnership with the Board -General of Health (DGS), the Central Administration of the Health System (ACSS) and the Regional Health Administrations (ARS) and in collaboration with the Regional Health Directorate of the Azores and the Regional Health Department of Madeira, which took place during this period.
