Minister of the Sea attends the premiere of the film «Horses of War» in Olhão

Movie premiere changed date at the request of those interested in watching

Ricardo Serrão Santos, Minister of the Sea, will attend the premiere of the film War Horses, scheduled for November 23, at 16:30 pm, in the Municipal Auditorium of Olhão.

The screening of the film War Horses, a production Chimera Visuals by João Rodrigues for the Municipality of Olhão, it serves as a motto to mark the National Day of the Sea, which was celebrated yesterday, the 16th.

Although the premiere was initially scheduled for an earlier date, due to the many requests for the exhibition to take place at the weekend, the Municipality decided to change the event's date to Saturday, November 23rd.

What was considered the largest seahorse community in the world is now facing serious risks of disappearing. A team of divers, photographers and scientists embarked on a mission through the labyrinthine waters of the Ria Formosa, with the objective of saving one of Portugal's most valuable treasures, the enigmatic sea horse. It is «a project that the Municipality of Olhão is very proud to finance», stresses that municipality.

The disappearance of seahorses in the Ria Formosa in recent years is alarming. Human pressure on this ecosystem has been brutal and the essential habitat of these living creatures, consisting mostly of seagrass meadows, is disappearing at a breakneck pace. Among the numerous threats, illegal capture destined for the Asian market has already decimated a large part of the population.

In order to combat this problem, the documentary War Horses, from the Municipality of Olhão, produced by Chimera Visuals, intends to act as a conservation tool by raising awareness in the community.

This is a film that aims to convey to the viewer the need to conserve our natural heritage, as well as the important role each one of us plays for the balance of the environment, our only home.

Situated in the Algarve, the Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. An invaluable heritage with an area of 18400 hectares that extends along 60 kilometers of coast in the eastern Algarve. It is a protected area with unique characteristics of extreme importance to the region.

If explored in a conscious and sustainable way, Ria Formosa could become one of the engines of the new “blue economy”. The potential of this ecosystem in terms of technology, new energies, aquaculture and biotechnology are today considered a national objective and a sea of opportunities.

Despite the entry to the premiere of War Horses be free, reservation is required according to availability of seats. Thus, tickets can be collected during the normal opening hours of the Municipal Auditorium of Olhão, from Tuesday to Friday from 14:00 to 18:00, from November 5th. A maximum of three (3) tickets will be made available per person, as long as there are vacant seats.
