Algarvian young man wins bronze at the CPLP Mathematics Olympiad

The young Algarvian Eduardo Guerreiro, who attends the 10th grade at Escola Secundária João de Deus, in Faro, won the bronze medal at the CPLP Mathematics Olympiads, which ended this Thursday, November 7th, in Brazil. 

Besides Eduardo Guerreiro, there were other Portuguese highlighted.

Leonardo Tavares (Dona Filipa de Lencastre Secondary School, Lisbon, 10th grade) and Pedro Antunes (Bartolomeu Dias College, Santa Iria da Azóia, 11th grade) won silver medals and Tiago Mourão (Santa Maria da Feira Secondary School, 10th grade) one of bronze.

The Olympic team will arrive this Saturday, November 9, at 06:25 am, at Humberto Delgado Airport, in Lisbon, from a flight from São Paulo. The Portuguese delegation is made up of six elements: four students, teacher Daniel Pinto and the team tutor João Santos.

The closing ceremony of the OMCPLP took place this Thursday, November 7th, at the Country Club of Nova Friburgo (Brazil). The event was attended by the Consul of Cape Verde.

This year, the CPLP Olympics should have taken place in Mozambique, but due to the serious disasters caused by the passage of Cyclone Idai, this was not possible.

The purpose of the CPLP Olympics is to unite Portuguese-speaking countries through mathematics, encourage the development of the discipline in all of them and deepen cooperation in this area. In this edition participated Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde and Mozambique.

Portugal's participation in the OMCPLP is organized by the Portuguese Society of Mathematics and the preparation of students is ensured by the Delfos Project, of the Mathematics Department of the University of Coimbra.

The Ministry of Education, Ciência Viva, Novo Banco, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Pathena support the holding of the Olympics.
