The exhibition “Festa da Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes” opens this Friday, November 15, at 16:30 pm, at the Municipal Museum of Olhão.

The exhibition, which brings together text, image and a multimedia component, is part of the Participatory Budget Portugal 2017 program, with the project “Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes – Ilha da Culatra, application for Intangible Cultural Heritage”.

The party documented here took place in 2017, but some images have been retrieved from earlier periods.

From the time when the priest, and sometimes the bishop, came from Faro, in a tugboat, the festival has adapted to the passage of time and new circumstances – namely the transition of the parish of Faro to Olhão.

“It is a tradition that updates and reinvents itself, revealing a strong dynamic that reflects the intense pulse of life in the community in which it operates. Constant in all periods, their faith and collective energy are the driving forces of their renewal», says the Chamber of Olhão.

The Festa in Honor of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, or simply, the Festa da Ilha, takes place on the first weekend of August.

There are two days of recreational and religious activities, which end with a procession that runs through the streets of Culatra.

«The image that represents the patron saint with her boat in her hand is unique and unmistakable among the other fishing communities in Portugal and Brazil, where her worship is celebrated».

The show will be open until December 31st.
