The last session was dedicated to Algarve filmmakers

O Farcume – International Short Film Festival of Faro it ended last October 26th, showing around 60 films, from over 20 countries, and had more than 500 viewers.

The last session was dedicated to Algarvian directors and took place at the former Cinema Ossónoba, in Estoi, with the presence of directors Diogo Simão and Fernando Mártires. It was also the moment when the winners of the 9th edition of this Festival were announced.

In the fiction category, the big winner was the Iranian film “Cellmate”, by director Behzad Khodaveisi, a film about the problem of “child brides”, forced marriages between adult men and children, which still occur in several countries.

In the documentary category, the winner was “Exodus”, by the German director Oliver Stiller. The film follows the caravan of refugees who, in 2018, fled poverty and organized crime and left Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, heading to the US-Mexico border in search of a better life.

Finally, in the animation category, the winner was “The Music Box”, by Chinese director Joe Chang, a film in which the author recalls the crimes committed during the so-called “Chinese Cultural Revolution”, led by Mao Tse Tung.

«The distinguished short films portray current phenomena that are of great complexity and concern regarding the challenges that societies still have to overcome, such as child marriages, the human tragedy associated with migratory movements and the suffering of oppressed peoples, victims of regimes non-democratic”, says the organization, in charge of the Faro 1540 – Association for the Defense and Promotion of the Environmental and Cultural Heritage of Faro.

A Faro 1540 has, moreover, "promoted initiatives that stimulate the conscious and critical reflection of all citizens on current social problems that violate the basic principles of human dignity."

Following this vision, the Faro 1540 dedicated the 3rd edition of Fartoon, to be held in November, to the migratory phenomenon.

According to the organization, «Facume proves to be a Festival of great relevance and that over the years has assumed an undeniable position of distinction in the Portuguese cinematographic panorama».

These 9 years of the event «represent for the Faro 1540 an affirmation of its role in the promotion, dissemination and dynamization of cinema in the region, recognized this year by the European Observatory of Cultural and Creative Cities as one of the outstanding events in the city of Faro».
