Conference Objectives:
“Journalism is a fundamental pillar of democracy, a commitment to freedom and independence, plurality and diversity, human dignity and social well-being.

Journalism is not reduced to the duty of informing, but it is responsible for scrutinizing the powers, watching over them, attacking them with responsibilities, denouncing unfulfilled promises.

However, this is a mission under threat – due to unemployment, precariousness, excessive concentration. The sector's sustainability difficulties put journalism's independence at risk. It is, therefore, urgent to debate the issue of media financing in Portugal.

The Union of Journalists calls everyone – the State, companies, public and private, large or small, national, regional or local, journalists and society – to go beyond diagnosis, pointing out paths and solutions».
