200 kilos of octopus and mussels seized in Olhão

Two men were identified

About 200 kilos of octopus and mussels were seized this week by the Olhão detachment of the GNR's Coastal Control Unit (UCC).

The UCC military seized 57 kilos of mussels and 151 kilos of octopus from two men, who were transporting them “without the necessary documentation to prove its traceability”.

“In a more detailed analysis of the fish and bivalves, it was possible to verify that the octopus specimens did not present the legally foreseen weight, being therefore immature”, revealed the GNR.

The two men were identified and the target of administrative offenses, “for not being accompanied by documentation for the transport of bivalves, the infraction of which is punishable by a fine of up to 3740 euros, for fleeing the auction, punishable with a fine of up to 44891 euros, and for transport of fish of lesser size or weight than legally foreseen, punishable by a fine of up to 37500 euros».

The GNR's UCC adds that "the bivalves were still alive and were returned to their natural habitat", while the octopus was donated "to an institution of social solidarity".
