Very new circus, starting right away with the return of the French company Cheptel Aleikoum, already in this month of October, original creations involving local artists, theatre of objects, the continuation of the medronho saga, culinary theater, walks with art in nature, a great music concert. This is, in short, the project schedule till the sea, for the new season of 2019/2020 of 365Algarve.
The fourth cycle of Lavrar o Mar includes 15 projects, five more than last year. «There are fifteen proposals to spend the winter with us».
This time, as they said, in an interview with Sul Informação, Madalena Victorino and Giacomo Scalisi, «The Lavrar o Mar season is motivated by the land. The earth as a physical element that welcomes and propels life, but also as a nostalgic place that calls us when we go away and to which we want to return, reminding us of the colors, smells and connections of a distant childhood».
“From this connection to the earth, we chose shows, for example, on the theme of fairies and fairy tales and their reverberation in the world of adults”, explained Madalena Victorino.
One of these shows will be precisely «Les Princesses/The Princesses», a new air and singing circus, which will open the program, with four performances in Aljezur, at the Vila Multiusos Space, from October 17th to 20th (21:00), and another four in Monchique, at the Manuel do Nascimento Basic School pavilion, from the 24th to the 27th of October (21:00).
«This is a very poetic, very musical show, again a circus, with princesses, princes, poisoned apples, bunnies», whose presentation involves the assembly of a structure, «the medusa», which will receive 200 spectators each night . There will also be a program for schools.
This is followed, from 1st to 3rd November, in Monchique, in another chapter of the medronho saga, this theater show in the mountains and in the distilleries, now under the motto "A Sangrada Família". “Our medronho saga changes a little, we're going to focus on the harvest and we'll even go out to the mountains, inviting the public to go and catch medronho. We will explore the harshness of the harvesting process, with its songs and snacks, without forgetting the backdrop of the saga of Monchiquenses Romeo and Juliet», says Giacomo Scalisi.
To bring to life the characters that came from the imagination of writer Sandro William Junqueira – father, children (whom we already knew from previous chapters) and now also his lover –, there will be actors António Fonseca, Pedro Frias, Rita Rodrigues and Estêvão Antunes.
“There will be limited presentations, only for 60 people at a time. Whoever gets a ticket, gets it. Whoever doesn't, will have to try to go to another one of our shows», warns Giacomo.
The third moment of this fourth season of till the sea once again its motto is the Sweet Potato Festival of Aljezur. Thus, from November 28th to 30th and December 1st, at the headquarters of Rancho Folclórico do Rogil, in the heart of the Aljezur region of sweet potato production, and then at Alferce (Monchique), at Casa do Povo, from 5th to 8th December, always at 19:30 pm, presents «The Gift of César – Who goes to the sea does not return to land», a culinary theater show (which includes dinner), in a play that had been originally commissioned by Teatro Viriato, in Viseu , to tour the region of Dão-Lafões, with text by Sandro William Junqueira.
This Caesar is not the Roman Emperor, nor is the story that of the books of Astérix: he is rather «César Troy and his family, and he speaks of cod, the most Portuguese of fish that speaks Norwegian, of the lands of Aljezur and the banks of the Newfoundland off Canada».
The menu for the onboard dinner integrated in the Aljezur Sweet Potato Festival consists of soup (called “chora”), dish (cod with sweet potato) and dessert (fried cod tongues with cinnamon, honey and Monchique pear) .
«In the preparation of this show, we also discovered many people from Aljezur and Monchique who had been fishing for cod», revealed Madalena Victorino.
At the end of the year, as is tradition, Monchique once again welcomes a new circus. Only, instead of one company, this time there will be at least two, maybe three, between December 27th and January 5th (with the exception of the 30th and 2).
«We will have two tents set up on the heliport, with two shows a day, one at 18 pm, more with families and children in mind, and another at 21 pm. Anyone who wants to come and spend the year or a weekend in Monchique will have a lot to do and still have time to have lunch and dinner there», highlighted Madalena Victorino.
At 18 pm, the presentation of "Les Dodos", by the French company Le P'tit Cirk, with its five acrobat musicians, in a performance rhythmic by the music of the guitars, double bass and violin.
In the evening, at 21 pm, it will be the turn of the Belgians «collective Malunés» present «Forever, Happily (Forever, Happy)», a show based «in the universe of fairy tales. It's a lot of fun and at the same time it makes you think. It is very contemporary in its themes», said Madalena Victorino.
The highlight of this almost new circus festival will be on New Year's Eve: in addition to the new circus, there will also be a concert by the recently premiered Vincentian Orchestra, which, with its warm rhythms, will help to face the cold of the mountains, along with the food and drinks that are part of this party.
For the next year of 2020, in January and February, Madalena Victorino is already preparing a creation for childhood and family, which will be called «A Viagem do Pequeno Mi», based on the books by Sandro William Junqueira. «Mi wants to make that great trip, it's about the imagination, those trips we take with ourselves. We will have books and notebooks as inspiration material in this dance and saxophone show. The dancer will dance on the stage that is the students' tables. For what? So you can think: where does the dance come from? She doesn't come from folded, but from the human movement, children see dancing everywhere».
In March, once again under the direction of Giacomo Scalisi and now based on texts by Afonso Cruz, another chapter of the saga «Medronho» arrives, the theater in the mountains and in the distilleries.
In the same month of March, the French company will be presented «tours», which Giacomo and Madalena had already programmed at Centro Cultural de Belém, 20 years ago, in its premiere.
Its creator Michel Laubu will be in Monchique and Aljezur to present his new show «Deux Pierres», a name that also plays with mathematics, as it can be written as «2πr».
«He works with objects trouves – stones, roots, drifting wood – and from these objects he builds characters. It is a theater without words, a theater of objects and manipulations», revealed Madalena Victorino.
Michel Laubu is also going to set up a laboratory “for four or five days, with people who want to learn their technique”. From this laboratory, a presentation will be made to the public. «Michel is a super creative artist, it's a miracle what he discovers and does from an object that doesn't seem to be worth anything».
«This laboratory is the beginning of another phase that we want to develop for the future, a more laboratory idea, developing projects in a deeper way. The objective is to place the laboratory at the center, and not just be a means to an end, but a space for work on the artistic matter», added Madalena.
New to the program for this fourth season will be the art walks in nature. Giacomo Scalisi reveals that it will be «10 routes in Aljezur and many others in Monchique, in the middle of nature, for groups of a maximum of fifteen people, accompanied by choreographers, actors, directors, scientists, philosophers, people connected to the church, on Sunday morning, ending with a social lunch».
The program, defined together with the Rota Vicentina, will make known «very special people, so that whoever participates, do not forget that tour. These will be visions that these people can take with them», said Madalena Victorino.
On Easter Sunday, just like last year, there will be "a great music concert in a wonderful place". More details will soon be known.
In April and May, it will be the turn of another laboratory, which will once again culminate in a presentation to the public. This time, the Clients from the laboratory will be "people of the third age", who will develop, with the trainers of the Rare Birds company, "body work, acrobatics, movement, between dance and the new circus".
Closing, from 28 to 31 May, there will be another original creation coordinated by Madalena Victorino, but which includes the work of many other creators, such as João Tuna, photographer and videomaker, Joana Guerra and Remi Gallet, musicians, or Inês Faria , in the writing.
Madalena Victorino already knows that this show will be called “When I go to Earth” and that it will take place “in a forest, at night”. "I'm not sure what will happen", confessed the choreographer in her interview with Sul Informação.
«When you go to the land», he explains, «is a phrase that has two paths: many Portuguese left their land to go to work in the city and then want to return, to return to where they belong. But there is also the idea of death, the last trip, the last way, of returning to the land».
The great difficulty, anticipates Madalena, will be to find “a forest between Aljezur and Monchique” where this production can take place. Because it is a production that will have «a very demanding technical apparatus, with the images, the filmic material transformed into fiction, projected on the treetops, in a pond, with earthen tables. There will be a very strong contact with the earth, its clods, temperature, humidity».
For now, this final show of Lavrar o Mar's fourth season is still in concept, largely in Madalena Victorino's mind. couple will have the ability to discover a magnificent, almost paradisiacal place in the middle of the mountains. It remains to wait to go there and see.
