Faro approves classification of the RTP building as a Property of Municipal Interest

Socialists want the building to be recovered by RTP and that it can also accommodate journalists from the Lusa Agency

The Chamber of Faro approved, this Monday, unanimously, a proposal by the PS councilors to start the procedure for classifying the RTP building as a Building of Municipal Interest.

Socialists consider that the RTP building Faro, located in Campo Senhora da Saúde, «presents a relevant cultural value for the Municipality of Faro, not only for its architectural characteristics (in terms of the value of the materials and aesthetics and because they portray a time, from the 50s), but also because the RTP Building Faro it bears symbolic values, since it is a remarkable witness of experiences and historical facts of regional communication and information».

The approval of the socialist proposal is just the beginning of the classification process, as it will still have to be submitted to other entities, such as the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage.

This position taking arises a few months after the party council made a statement to the Public Prosecutor's Office ownership of the land where this building is located.

the PS Faro defends that the lands of the South Regional Issuer, where the RTP delegation operates, in Faro, are municipal and cannot be sold, as intended by the administration of public radio and television.

Socialists believe that there was an illegal appropriation by the RDP in 1985.

"Given the circumstances, which put the integrity and perpetuity of the RTP Building at risk Faro (since it is located on land on which RTP has had an intention to sell), it is imperative that the Municipality of Faro promote its special protection and enhancement through its classification as a property of municipal interest», consider the councilors of the PS.

In statements to the Sul Informação, Paulo Neves, president of the PS council, explained that «what we want is for the building to be recovered by RTP, as happened in Coimbra. The RTP building, in Coimbra, is identical to this one and was recovered and refitted. The building may even house, in addition to RTP, the Lusa Agency which, at the moment, does not have a physical space in the Algarve».

Regarding the participation that was made to the Public Ministry, the leader of the Farense socialists said that “there has been no progress yet. Its procedures are in progress, there has now been a legal vacation. Furthermore, we are not talking about an emerging situation. It would only emerge if there was already a promissory purchase and sale contract for that land signed, which has not happened yet».

The Chamber of Faro, led by the social democrat Rogério Bacalhau, has not yet taken a position on the issue of land ownership.

According to our newspaper, the documentation delivered by the PS to the Public Ministry is still being analyzed and a municipal source told the Sul Informação that “the executive has no comment to make on this issue”.
