Workshop reveals our genetic heritage at Ciência Viva de Lagos

Participants will be able to learn more about their ancestors through genetics

The Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos will host the workshop “The Genetic Odyssey”, on October 5th and November 30th, and give participants the opportunity to learn more about their ancestors.

In this workshop, organized and taught by Luísa Pereira from the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S) of the University of Porto, the aim will be «to make a genetic characterization of the ancestry of each individual, tracing origins and following the migrations of human populations that brought to each one the genes that constitute it».

The initiative will have a version in Portuguese and another in English, sessions that will take place on the same day, but at different times.

According to the CCV of Lagos, the workshop will try to answer several questions, namely "which is the large group of the human species to which we belong?", "what is the weight of Neanderthals in our genome?" and “where does our genetic heritage place us on the world map?”, among others.

In the first session, scheduled for Saturday, October 5th, the genetic test will be presented, “the ethical issues involved” will be discussed and the results that can be obtained will be explained.

Afterwards, each participant will have to fill a small tube with a saliva sample that will later be used for DNA analysis.

«In the second session, the individual results will be presented to each participant, confidentially, and generic aspects of the information on the genetic heritage that can be obtained with this type of tests will be discussed», according to the CCV of Lagos, which adds that « test will not give any information about the health of the participants'.

The price for the two sessions is 150 euros and includes participation in the two sessions, genetic testing and ancestry certificates.

These workshops «will only be held in Porto, Lisbon, Coimbra and Lagos».
