Guided tours show the archaeological treasures of Loulé Velho

Visits will be guided by Catarina Viegas and Rui Roberto de Almeida

Loulé City Council will promote guided visits to the archaeological excavations of Loulé Velho beach, in Quarteira, tomorrow, Tuesday, from 8:30 am to 13:30 pm and from 16:30 pm to 19:00 pm.

On this open day, visitors can learn more about this archaeological site and the results of the excavations that will take place until Thursday, the 19th, whose objective is to understand «what still exists of this site from the Roman period, an important commercial point in the Algarve, and that has been disappearing over the last decades», according to the municipality.

For this, they will have technical support from Catarina Viegas and Rui Roberto de Almeida.

This archaeological campaign is being carried out by a research team composed of elements from the Municipal Museum of Loulé, in partnership with researchers from UNIARQ – Center for Archeology of the University of Lisbon, within the scope of the LORIVAI – Loulé Velho project and the Ribeira de Palestuário Carcavai.

«Loulé Velho is an unavoidable place in the panorama of the Roman domain of the Algarve coast, with an occupation that goes from the XNUMXst century BC to the XNUMXth/XNUMXth century. It is a luxurious villa which, given its geographic location, acted as a hub to unify the population, with the capacity to generate economic activities that provided its continued occupation», described the City Council of Loulé.
